Life on the Belize Barrier Reef
Just beneath the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea lies one of Belize's greatest natural treasures: the Belize Barrier Reef.
A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem filled with living organisms. Although coral may look like colorful rocks or plants, it is actually made up of tiny animals called polyps.
The reef provides a habitat for many species, including sea turtles, fish, rays, and sharks. Some animals use the coral for shelter, while others find food among its many hiding places.
But this underwater world needs protection. Pollution, warming oceans, and damage from human activity can threaten the reef and the animals that depend on it.
